Box register

Every box by number, with its room code, contents and priority, checked off as it is loaded, delivered and unpacked. The same list is your delivery check and your claim record.

Essential on a first pass if you pack. The register is how you find things at the other end and how you prove what was in a box. The supplies sheet is optional. The packing system sets up the numbers, codes and priorities.

Boxes

One row per box, entered when you close it. The box itself carries only the number, the code and the priority; the contents live here.

Packing supplies (optional)

Optional on a first pass. One row per kind of material. A blank cost means not priced yet; 0 means you already have it.

How to use this sheet

  • One row per box, entered as you close it. Write the number on the box on two sides and the top, with the code and the priority; the contents stay here.
  • Contents in enough detail to find a thing. “Kitchen” is not a list. “Coffee maker, 4 mugs, kettle” is.
  • Check off at each stage. Loaded, delivered and unpacked are three checks. A box that is loaded but not delivered is the start of a claim.
  • Keep the register with you. Print it the day before moving day, or keep this page on your phone. It should not ride in the truck.
Fictional example

The example rows are the Brandts' first three boxes (fictional): box 1 is the kitchen's open-first box, box 2 is Leo's open-first box with his crib sheets and night light, and box 3 is a small box of hardcover books, marked heavy, going to the den.

Limits

The register is a household method. It does not replace the mover's inventory, which is the document the federal rules name for an interstate move; it sits beside it. Box weight guidance from rental and container companies is a range, not a safe limit for any person.
